Green heat in Karup: When a heat pump does more than just heat
With Solid Energy's heat pump, Karup Varmeværk has built a unique plant that supplies 75% of heat from green energy sources, secures the supply and makes it possible to adjust the production of heat in relation to energy prices.

At the end of the residential area in Karup, one of Solid Energy's heat pumps stands and works around the clock. It does more than provide heat to homes and businesses — it is part of an intelligent energy system that ensures sustainable, stable and cost-optimised district heating.
At the district heating plant in Karup, the heat pump works together with a large field of solar cells and the nearby potato flour mill to create one of Denmark's most efficient and green heating solutions. The pump is an advanced air-to-water solution that draws energy from the air and turns it into heat that covers more than 50% of the local area's needs — and it doesn't stop there. At the same time, it provides process cooling to the potato flour mill, making the whole system even more efficient.
From gas to 75% green energy
Before the heat pump became part of the setup, Karup District Heating relied on gas engines and gas boilers. Now up to 75% of heat is supplied as green energy, and consumers receive a heating price that is always optimised. This means less vulnerability to price fluctuations and a greener future for Karup.
“The heat pump makes us less vulnerable to energy prices and has significantly increased our security of supply. Today it is our primary source of energy, and together with solar heat, we now provide a district heating solution that is both sustainable and economically beneficial,” says Brian Nedergaard, operations manager at Karup Varmeværk a.m.b.a.
Intelligent design, easy operation
The heat pump is built in modules and composed of components that are easy to procure and maintain. Before the installation, Karup Varmeværk visited the factory in Skjern to see the technology up close — and they were not disappointed.
“It is important for us to have a partner who understands our needs. Solid Energy has been a great partner — always ready to help when we want to optimize operations. I've been in and tweaked some settings myself, and they've been there all the way,” says Brian Nedergaard.
Karup Varmeværk has made the leap from traditional energy to an intelligent, future-proof heating solution. With Solid Energy's heat pump, they're not just ready for winter — they're ready for the future.

Power-to-X production heats the living rooms in Aabenraa
A massive investment is being made to make the transport, industrial and energy sectors as CO₂ neutral as possible. In that conversion, green methanol, or e-methanol, is intended to play a significant and prominent role. E-methanol is produced in Power-to-X (PTx) plants, and the heat from the process is harnessed by Solid Energy's heat pumps to produce district heat.
