Geothermal breakthrough in Aarhus: District heat now flows from the earth's interior

In Aarhus, one of Europe's most visionary district heating projects is now in operation. For the first time, geothermal heat from a depth of 2,500 metres flows directly into the radiators of thousands of Aarhus homes — and this is done with the help of heat pumps from Solid Energy.

This is a milestone — not only for Aarhus, but for the entire green transition in Europe.

The project sets a new standard. It takes up minimal land surface space, has extremely low CO₂ emissions and significantly reduces dependence on fossil energy sources. At the same time, it shows how innovative technology and strong partnerships can accelerate societal transformation — without compromising on economics or reliability.

“This is a very big day for Aarhus — and for Denmark,” Aarhus Mayor Jacob Bundsgaard said at the opening of the facility to TV2East Jutland.
