Power-to-X production heats the living rooms in Aabenraa

a massive investment is being made to make the transport, industrial and energy sectors as CO₂ neutral as possible. In that conversion, green methanol, or e-methanol, is intended to play a significant and prominent role. E-methanol is produced in Power-to-X (PTx) plants, and the heat from the process is harnessed by Solid Energy's heat pumps to produce district heat.

In Kassø near Aabenraa, one of the world's largest e-methanol production plants will be built on the construction site at Kassøvej 23. When e-methanol is produced at the plant, significant amounts of heat are generated.

Instead of letting this heat go to waste, Solid Energy's heat pump comes into operation. The specially designed heat pump raises the temperature of the heat generated by the production to 72 degrees, so that it can be distributed to district heating customers in Aabenraa.

We are pleased to be able to further contribute to the green transition by upgrading the waste heat from our methanol production to usable heat, which Aabenraa Fjernvärä can send out to their network. At the same time, we get cold water return, which we use to cool our process equipment with, so it is definitely win-win

Less waste and more heat

Poul Frøkjær is project manager at European Energy and has the control bars on the project.” We are pleased to be able to further contribute to the green transition by upgrading the waste heat from our methanol production to usable heat, which Aabenraa District Heating can send out to their network. At the same time, we get cold water return, which we use to cool our process equipment with, so it is definitely win-win”

The plant is an example of efficient sector coupling, where resources in surplus from one industry are harnessed for the benefit of another. For Aabenraa District Heating, the district heating provided by Solid Energy's heat pump provides a reduced dependence on biomass, and for citizens there is a potential for more stable heat prices.

The heat utilization agreement is a collaboration between European Energy, which has built the PTX plant, and Aabenraa Fjernvärma, while Solid Energy has supplied the heat pump that ensures that the citizens of Aabenraa get heat from the waste heat of the plant.

Geothermal breakthrough in Aarhus: District heat now flows from the earth's interior

In Aarhus, one of Europe's most visionary district heating projects is now in operation. For the first time, geothermal heat from a depth of 2,500 metres flows directly into the radiators of thousands of Aarhus homes — and this is done with the help of heat pumps from Solid Energy. ‍
