District Heating Heat Pumps

If your network needs to move away from fossil fuels, a heat pump for district heating is the most effective solution. We design and manufacture district heating heat pumps in Denmark, delivering high temperatures at scale with natural refrigerants as the driving force.

That means high efficiency, capacity that scales to your network, and equipment built for a long service life.

How efficient is a heat pump for district heating?

A heat pump for district heating delivers up to four times more heat energy than the electricity it uses. That is an efficiency traditional boiler plants cannot match. It draws thermal energy from air, water or industrial waste heat and upgrades it to the temperature your distribution network requires.

This efficiency comes partly from the fact that we exclusively use natural HydroCarbon refrigerants, which perform just as well as synthetic alternatives, but with a significantly lower climate impact.

What capacities do district heating heat pumps deliver?

Our district heating heat pumps deliver capacities from 200 kW to 4,800 kW, and the modular design means capacity can be scaled precisely to match your network's needs, without oversizing the system.

If your processes require higher flow temperatures, our high temperature heat pump, which reaches up to 165°C, is developed for exactly that purpose.

Should your network need more than 4,800 kW from a single unit, we combine multiple heat pumps through our XLX platform, so total capacity matches demand without a fixed upper limit.

How do district heating pumps ensure stable and efficient operation?

Our systems ensure stable operation through intelligent remote monitoring, letting you track performance in real time, catch issues early and often resolve them without sending a technician to site.

This monitoring also makes it possible to run the system when electricity prices are lowest, without compromising supply security.

We support operation with five-year service and maintenance agreements that protect your investment throughout the system's lifetime.

How does a district heating heat pump use industrial heat waste?

A district heating heat pump can capture waste heat from industrial processes and upgrade it to the temperature your network requires, instead of letting it go to waste.

That makes it a natural industrial heat pump, where waste heat from a single process can supply the local network with heat.

Our LWC Combi and ALW Combi solutions are built specifically for this task, delivering heating in winter, cooling in summer and heat recovery in spring and autumn from the same unit.

Frequently asked questions

How is a district heating pump installed?

Installation of a district heating heat pump follows a plug-and-play principle, and you can carry out Factory Acceptance Testing at our facility in Denmark before the system is shipped. The unit is also among the quietest on the market, giving you the freedom to place it close to residential areas.

Can a district heating pump be integrated into an existing network?

District heating heat pumps can typically be integrated into existing networks, whether they are supplementing current capacity, replacing older boilers or forming part of an entirely new distribution system. Integration usually requires mapping flow temperature, pressure conditions and return temperature in the existing network before selecting the right solution. We advise you throughout the entire process, from mapping to commissioning.

How long do district heating heat pumps last?

A district heating heat pump typically has a technical lifespan of several decades, provided it is maintained according to a fixed service plan. A design that allows components to be replaced individually also means the system can last longer than solutions where the entire system must be replaced when just one part wears out.

Why are natural refrigerants used in modern district heating heat pumps?

Natural refrigerants such as HydroCarbon are chosen because the EU's F-gas Regulation is gradually phasing out synthetic refrigerants with a high climate impact. At the same time, natural refrigerants perform just as efficiently as synthetic alternatives, even at the high flow temperatures district heating requires, making them a future-proof choice for the sector.

Green heat in Karup: When a heat pump does more than just heat

With Solid Energy's heat pump, Karup Varmeværk has built a unique plant that supplies 75% of heat from green energy sources, secures the supply and makes it possible to adjust the production of heat in relation to energy prices. During the months when the local potato flour factory is in production the heat pump uses waste heat and provides the factory with chilled water.
